The votes are in after the first round of The Sporting News “NCAA Jam” bracket and, oh my, what an Elite Eight we have left standing.
After 8,758 votes on Monday, our field for an all-time “NBA Jam”-style 2-on-2 college tournament leaves us with three national championship rematches among the four games on the docket. In the West region, Georgetown will take on North Carolina (1982) and Kentucky will face Kansas (2012), while in the East, UCLA and Louisville will stage a rematch of the 1980 NCAA final. The final Elite Eight matchup will be Duke against Indiana, two teams that met in the 1992 Final Four. Duke (Zion Williamson, Grant Hill) survived the closest first-round matchup against UNLV (Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon).
The North Carolina-Georgetown showdown, which will feature the tandem of Michael Jordan and Vince Carter against Patrick Ewing and Allen Iverson, could be the game of the bracket. The Hoyas seemingly have the perfect balance of inside dominance and an indomitable one-on-one perimeter scorer. But defensively, can the 7-foot Ewing and 6-foot Iverson keep up with UNC’s legendary wings?
