Matches in the Champions League don’t come much bigger than this as Manchester City and Bayern Munich meet in the first leg of the quarterfinals.

The hosts will be buoyed following their 4-1 dismantling of Southampton in the Premier League at the weekend, especially as Erling Haaland returned from injury to score two more goals in what has been a record-breaking campaign for the Norwegian striker.

But Bayern Munich love this competition historically and come into this clash under new coach Thomas Tuchel, who is targeting more success against City. The German has won three of his five meetings against the Manchester club, including a famous 1-0 victory in the Champions League final with Chelsea back in 2021.

Manchester City vs Bayern Munich odds

As anticipated, Manchester City have been made substantial favourites for this first-leg match at the Etihad Stadium.

That’s partly owing to their fantastic recent form, which has seen them win eight straight matches across all competitions, but also their prowess at home: they haven’t lost at the Etihad since mid-November.

The hosts’ free-scoring nature has also been highlighted recently through victories of 4-1, 4-1, 6-0 and 7-0 across their prior four outings. That makes it likely they will earn a vital victory here, especially given Bayern’s problems of late.

Manchester City vs Bayern Munich team news

After Haaland returned for City at the weekend against Southampton, manager Pep Guardiola will have a near full-strength squad to pick from for this huge clash. Phil Foden remains the only absentee in terms of injury.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich also have few new injury concerns following their back-to-back clashes with Freiburg this week. Manuel Neuer remains sidelined due to a broken leg whilst Lucas Hernandez and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting look set to miss out due to respective knee injuries.

  • This will be the seventh meeting between these two sides with both winning three of those matches apiece.

  • Bayern Munich have only lost two of their prior 10 matches when facing English opposition away from home in the Champions League (W6, D2).

  • Manchester City have won their past 10 home Champions League matches against German opposition by a combined scoreline of 39-10.

Manchester City vs Bayern Munich prediction

Given the fact that City have scored 21 times across their most recent four competitive outings, we fancy them to be too tough to handle for Bayern in this Champions League clash.

Across the board in an attacking sense, City have so many weapons at their disposal, whether that be Haaland and his ridiculous goalscoring, Jack Grealish and his recent fantastic form, or Kevin De Bruyne’s all-round brilliance.

Couple that with the fact that Bayern are adjusting to a managerial change at present, and the fact that they’ve lost two of their past four matches, and it’s easy to see why City come into this matchup as favourites.

Manchester City vs Bayern Munich best bet

  • Pick: Over 2.5 goals
  • Odds: -165 (BetMGM)

Given the firepower that both of these sides have at their disposal, you’ve got to fancy a high-scoring affair at the Etihad.

City will be desperate to make Bayern pay at home to steal a march in the tie, though that could equally see the visitors find gaps on the counter-attack through the likes of Thomas Muller and Jamal Musiala.

With City’s scoring form and Bayern’s equal attacking quality, the over 2.5 goals scored here should come in.

Manchester City vs Bayern Munich flier bet

Grealish is the man in form at the moment for Guardiola’s City.

The England international has both scored and assisted in his previous two Premier League matches against Liverpool and Southampton and we fancy him to continue that form in this first leg against Bayern.

Granted, Bayern are a much tougher opposition at present but they continue to show weakness on the right-hand side of their defence. Benjamin Pavard has struggled for form in particular, as too has Noussair Mazraoui. Joao Cancelo, on loan from Man City, could get the nod but he too can prove vulnerable defensively and may struggle against Grealish down that flank.
